I don’t know about you, but my thumb has gotten a workout every morning (and every day) for the past few years each time I open my inbox. Has yours too? Each time I open my inbox on my phone to look at my inbox, I start by choosing the selector option and highlighting all of the junk that doesn’t serve me. Then, off the archives, it goes.
Many people in the online space have treated our inboxes — our personal, sacred place on the Internet — like a free-for-all.
But if you ask me, as an RVer and someone who appreciates simplicity and ease, the inbox is the one space that should be free from doom scrolling like we do on other newsfeeds (the kind of scrolling that gets you glued to the screen and missing out on the life that’s happening in front of you) and free from overwhelming thumb workouts every single the little envelope app gets opened on the phone.
Now, I’m a marketer as you know. And I *know* (and preach) the importance of the inbox. So I paid attention to something in myself over the past few months — which emails never got selected and instantly sent to the archives?
There was a clear pattern of things that got me excited to open.
They were the emails that felt personal, like little letters from a friend — but there was more.
They were also emails that had something useful and insightful inside. A recommendation for a tool I might not have heard of. A swipe file I could use that week in my writing.
These emails are true relationship builders. Not the constant emails that make me feel exhausted by the relentless sales that are happening or cause me to feel like I’ve missed out on the opportunity of the century simply because I don’t click their links week after week. The emails I love are the ones that feel like the same kind of conversation we’d have if we were sitting around a campfire, sooo…
